Plasterboard Painting in Plymouth

New plaster is alkaline and highly absorbent. Applying full-strength emulsion straight to a fresh skim coat causes uneven absorption and patchy coverage.

The correct approach is a sealing coat of diluted emulsion, applied once the plaster has dried to a pale, uniform colour. This stabilises the surface and gives the topcoat something consistent to bind to.

We carry out this full process on every fresh plaster job. Two topcoats follow once the sealing coat has fully dried.

The result is a flat, even finish that lasts.

A sealing coat is not simply a first coat of paint. It is a diluted emulsion mix, often 80 percent emulsion to 20 percent water, that soaks into the surface rather than sitting on top of it.

We allow adequate drying time between the sealing coat and each subsequent coat. Rushing this stage is the most common cause of plasterboard finish failures.

Not all plasterboard jobs involve fresh skim. Older extensions or previous repair work may have hairline cracks, uneven joints, or areas where the skim coat has partially lifted.

We identify these issues before starting. Any cracks are filled, dried, and sanded smooth.

Raised joints or screw dimples are spotted and levelled. This preparation work separates a professional finish from a paint-over-the-problems approach.

Once the sealing coat has fully dried and the surface is stable, we apply the first topcoat. This coat covers the surface fully and begins to show the final colour.
