Ceiling Painters in Plymouth

Plymouth Painters are ceiling painters covering standard smooth ceilings, Artex, high ceilings, cornicing, and decorative plasterwork across Plymouth.
- Smooth ceiling painting and full coverage
- Artex and textured ceiling finishing and painting
- Cornicing, ceiling roses, and decorative plasterwork
- Water stain treatment and stain-blocking primer
- High ceilings with access equipment
Georgian and early Victorian terraces in Stoke, along Albert Road and Devonport Road, have high original ceilings with decorative cornicing. These need careful brush cutting-in rather than rolling. Standard estimates rarely reflect the extra time this adds. We assess and quote correctly from the start.

Ceiling Painting Services
Smooth Ceiling Painting
A well-painted ceiling needs good preparation and the right product. Standard ceilings in 1930s and post-war properties are typically plaster or plasterboard.
They take paint well when prepared correctly.
We fill cracks and nail pops, sand the filler flush, and apply a sealing coat to repaired areas before the topcoat. This stops the filler showing through the finished surface.
Two coats of ceiling white are standard. On ceilings yellowed by smoke or staining, a stain-blocking primer is applied first to prevent bleed-through.
For a full interior painting project, we schedule ceiling work before walls to avoid disturbing finished surfaces.
Artex and Textured Ceilings
Artex ceilings are common in Plymouth properties built in the 1970s and 1980s. They can be painted, overskimmed, or have a thin coat applied to soften the texture.
We paint Artex ceilings using a thick-nap roller to reach the peaks and troughs. Two coats are needed for even coverage without losing texture definition.
Where Artex has been damaged or patched, we blend repairs before painting. We do not advise sanding Artex without checking its age.
Pre-1985 Artex may contain asbestos.
Cornicing and Ceiling Roses
Cornicing and ceiling roses in period properties need hand brush work, not rolling. The profiles catch paint build-up and careful cutting-in is needed to avoid filling the detail.
We use appropriate brushes and work methodically around each profile. The junction between cornice and ceiling is cut by hand for a clean, straight line.
Ceiling roses are painted in the ceiling colour unless specified otherwise. Where a rose has been heavily filled or painted over, we clean back the profile before repainting to restore the original detail.
Combined with plasterboard painting in newer extensions, we can cover the full ceiling in one visit.
Water Damage and Staining
Water stains on ceilings are caused by leaks from above. Painting over a stain without treating it causes the stain to bleed back through new paint within days.
We apply a stain-blocking primer to all affected areas before any ceiling white goes on. This seals the stain and prevents bleed-through.
The stain-blocking product is a different formulation to standard primer.
Where the ceiling has been softened or weakened by water, we assess before painting. Softened plaster or plasterboard that has delaminated needs addressing before decoration.
High Ceilings
High ceilings need access equipment to paint safely and accurately. A standard stepladder is not adequate for ceilings above three metres.
We use hop-ups and scaffold boards for lower work, and tower scaffold for taller ceilings.
Working at height takes longer than standard ceiling painting. We factor this into the quote.
A high-ceilinged room in a Stoke Georgian terrace costs more than the same floor area in a post-war semi.
For hallway painting in period terraces, the staircase void often creates a double-height ceiling. We plan access carefully to avoid damage to walls and banisters.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Visit
We assess the ceiling type, height, condition, and any areas of staining or damage. Access requirements are noted at this stage.
2. Written Quote
We provide a fixed written quote covering preparation, priming, and painting. High-ceiling surcharges are included transparently.
3. Preparation
Fills, stain-blocking, and sealing coats are applied before the main ceiling coats begin.
4. Painting
We apply two full coats with adequate drying time between them. Cornicing and roses are cut in by hand.
5. Final Check
We check the coverage and edge work under varying light conditions before completing.
