Wallpaper Installers in Plymouth

Wallpapering Ornate Floral Wallpaper by Plymouth Painters in Plymouth

Plymouth Painters are wallpaper installers in Plymouth covering pattern matching, lining paper preparation, and full room hanging.

  • Feature wall hanging with pattern matching
  • Full room wallpapering including ceiling drops
  • Lining paper for uneven or period plaster walls
  • Wallpaper removal and surface preparation
  • Period hallways with original plaster walls

Period hallways in Peverell and Mutley terraces along Outland Road and North Road East often have original plaster walls with slight undulation. Hanging straight-patterned wallpaper on an imperfect surface needs correct lining paper preparation. Without it, the pattern telegraphs every wall imperfection.

Wallpapering Services

Feature Walls

A feature wall creates a focal point without committing to a full-room pattern. The key to a good result is centring the pattern correctly and aligning drops precisely at every seam.

We measure and mark a centre point before cutting the first drop. This ensures the pattern is balanced on the wall and avoids a half-motif at one side.

Large repeat patterns carry a higher material waste allowance. We calculate this at the quoting stage so there are no surprises with rolls ordered.

Full Room Wallpapering

Full room wallpapering covers all four walls and, where specified, the ceiling. It requires careful planning around doors, windows, light switches, and obstacles.

We start from the most visible corner and work around the room, adjusting for out-of-plumb walls. The final drop is positioned in the least visible location.

Ceiling drops run parallel to the main window. This minimises the appearance of seams when light falls across the surface.

Lining Paper

Lining paper is essential preparation for wallpaper on uneven or period plaster surfaces. It provides a stable, consistent base and prevents undulations in the wall from showing through the finished wallcovering.

On period properties, we hang lining paper horizontally to avoid the lining seams coinciding with the wallpaper seams. This is called cross-lining and produces a far flatter result.

For walls that are going to be painted rather than papered, lining paper also produces a smoother finish. We recommend it on original lime plaster walls before interior painting in period homes.

Period Properties and Cornicing

Wallpapering around original cornicing requires a clean, straight cut against the profile. Cutting too high leaves a gap.

Cutting too low tucks paper behind the cornice and causes lifting.

We use a steady hand and a straight edge to achieve a consistent line. Where the cornice profile is complex, we trim on the wall rather than on the table to follow the exact contour.

Original plaster walls in Peverell and Mutley period terraces often have slight movement at the cornice joint. We stabilise any loose sections before hanging to prevent the paper from lifting over time.

For feature wall painting as an alternative to wallpaper, we can advise on both options during the site visit.

Wallpaper Removal

Old wallpaper must be fully removed before re-hanging. Papering over existing layers causes adhesion failure and pattern distortion over time.

We soak and strip thoroughly, including any backing paper left on the wall. Once stripped, we assess the wall surface and repair any damage before hanging new paper.

Where wallpaper has been applied directly to bare plaster, the removal process can damage the surface. We seal any affected areas and apply lining paper as a base before the new paper goes on.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site Visit and Consultation

We visit the room, assess the wall condition, and discuss the wallpaper you have chosen or are considering. We advise on lining paper needs and pattern placement.

2. Written Quote

We provide a fixed written quote covering preparation, lining, and hanging. Roll quantities are included in the advice we give.

3. Preparation

Existing wallpaper is removed if present. Walls are repaired, primed, and lined where needed before any new paper is hung.

4. Hanging

We work methodically from a centred start point. Pattern repeats are matched precisely at every seam.

5. Finishing and Trim

Edges are trimmed neatly at cornices, skirtings, and architraves. Seams are pressed flat and any air bubbles addressed before we leave.
