Masonry Painters in Plymouth

Plymouth Painters are masonry painters covering rendered walls, exposed brick, stone facades, and coastal-exposed elevations across Plymouth.
- Rendered masonry painting with correct system selection
- Exposed brick and stone facade treatment
- Breathable coatings for historic lime-mortared stonework
- Biological growth treatment before painting
- Marine-grade coatings for coastal-facing properties
Salt air reaches well into Plymouth’s coastal-facing streets. Properties on elevated ground in Stoke and Devonport see paint degrade faster than anything inland. Standard masonry paints are not designed for this environment. The wrong system is the most common cause of early failure.

Rendered Walls
Rendered masonry is the most common exterior surface across Plymouth’s mid-century and post-war stock. In sheltered positions, a standard smooth masonry paint performs well.
In coastal-facing or elevated positions, the wrong product will blister, crack, and trap moisture within a couple of years.
We assess each property’s position and render condition before selecting a paint system. For properties in Stoke, Devonport, and Stonehouse facing south or west, we use a breathable, flexible masonry paint.
This allows moisture vapour to escape and prevents the trapped-moisture failure that causes render to crack and blister from behind.
Our exterior painting approach covers full system selection, preparation, and application for rendered elevations of all sizes.
Exposed Brick
Exposed brick facades are common across Plymouth’s Victorian terraces in Mutley, St Judes, and Lipson. Painted brick requires a breathable system to allow the mortar joints to release moisture.
Sealing a brick facade with a non-breathable paint traps damp inside the wall and accelerates mortar deterioration.
We use breathable masonry paints on all exposed brickwork. We apply them only after the surface has been cleaned, treated for any biological growth, and assessed for mortar joint condition.
Any loose or spalled mortar is flagged before painting begins.
If you are also considering wood painting for the window frames and soffits at the same time, we can programme both in a single visit to reduce disruption.
Stone Facades
Plymouth has significant areas of historic stonework, particularly around Stonehouse, the Barbican, and older properties in Plympton St Maurice. Painted stone requires particular care.
Most historic stonework was built with lime mortar, which remains active and breathable as part of the wall system.
Applying a non-breathable paint to a lime-mortared stone wall causes serious long-term damage. Moisture trapped behind the paint has nowhere to go and drives through the mortar joints, accelerating decay.
We use only breathable paint systems on lime-mortared stonework.
We also carry out biological growth treatment on stone facades before painting. Lichen, moss, and algae all need to be treated and removed before any paint system is applied.
Without treatment, they will grow back through the new topcoat within a season.
Breathable Coatings
Breathable masonry coatings are essential for any property in Plymouth that has solid walls, lime mortar, or older render. These properties need to breathe.
A non-breathable paint system on a solid-walled Victorian or Edwardian property is one of the most common causes of internal damp.
Breathable coatings allow moisture vapour to pass through the paint film while still keeping liquid water out. They are available in a full range of colours and look the same as standard masonry paints.
The difference is entirely in how they perform.
We use breathable coatings as the default for all pre-1920 properties in Plymouth. We also use them on any property where the render or mortar shows signs of moisture movement.
This is not a premium upgrade. It is the correct product for these buildings.
Biological Growth Treatment
Plymouth’s damp climate means biological growth is common on exterior masonry. Moss, lichen, algae, and black mould all need to be treated before any masonry paint system is applied.
Painting over biological growth without treatment leads to rapid re-growth through the new paint.
We carry out a mould treatment wash as part of the preparation process on all masonry jobs where growth is present. The treatment is applied, left to work for the required dwell time, then washed off before priming.
This is not an optional step.
On properties with significant lichen coverage, a second application may be needed. We assess this on site and include it in the written quote if required.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Assessment
We visit the property to assess the masonry type, render or stone condition, exposure position, and any existing biological growth. This determines the correct paint system and preparation needed.
2. Written Quote
You receive a fixed written quote covering all preparation, treatment, and painting. No surprises once the job starts.
3. Preparation
We clean the surface, carry out mould treatment where needed, repair any loose render or mortar, and apply a masonry primer to any bare patches.
4. Painting
We apply the correct paint system for the surface type and position. Coastal and exposed properties receive a marine-grade or breathable system as appropriate.
5. Final Check
We inspect the finished elevation for coverage, edge treatment, and consistency before leaving the site.
